Boğaziҫi University also known as Bosphorus University was founded in the year 1863. It is situated on the Bosphorus strait- the European side of it, Istanbul, Turkey. That’s where the name of the university comes from. It was established as Robert College in the first place and was the first American University founded outside the territorial boundaries of the USA. A wealthy philanthropist and a missionary came together during the Crimean War and post discussion, an idea for the university was born. About a decade later the university was established. It was put in reins of the Turkish government in the year 1971. Though it is directly under the Turkish rule, the university still has a strong relationship with the system of American education.
The university had 11506 students along with a count of 1007 faculty members in the years 2014/15. Among the total students enrolled, 7% of students were international in origins. The university offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields of study such as science, art, education, economics, engineering, foreign languages, and computer sciences. The faculties are divided into undergraduate and graduate institutes of 6 each. It also provides students the opportunity to study abroad by virtue of exchange programs. Moreover. The institute is divided into 6 campuses of south campus, north campus, Hisar campus, Kandili campus, Uҫaksavar campus, and Saritepe campus.
It has influential affiliations the likes of which are the EUA (European University Association), UNIMED (Mediterranean Universities Union), and IAU (International Association of Universities). Of the many influential people who have passed out from this university as its alumni, some are- Nil Karaibrahimgil (A composer and singer), Murat Gülsoy (A writer), Aydemir Güler (A politician), Ahmet Davutoğlu (Prime Minister), and Güler Sabanci (CEO of Sabanci holdings).
