Situated in Lausanne, Switzerland, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) came into existence in 1853. Also known as Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in the English language, it specializes in engineering and physical sciences. The university has 3 missions in the world-rank arena- research, education, and technology.
Spread over 135 acres of land, the University operates more than 200 laboratories. EPFL comprises 7 schools formed of numerous institutes that group themselves as research Units. Seven schools of EPFL include- School of Engineering, School of Communication Sciences, School of Basic Sciences and School of Life Sciences among others.
The university that started with approximately 350 students has been evolving since then. EPFL, today enrolls more than 9,000 students every year coming from 120 countries across the globe. More than 1500 researchers and experts constitute the teaching staff of EPFL.
English and French are considered as the official languages of the university making it a comfortable ecosystem for the students coming from all walks of life. The university also offers satellite facilities in Geneva, Basel and Sion campuses in order to serve outstation students even more effectively.
EPFL is the official scientific advisor working for Alinghi. In the arena of teaching activities and research, the university operates several nuclear reactors including CROCUS, P3 Bio-Hazard and Tokamak Fusion reactor among others.
