3rd oldest technical University across the globe, Istanbul Technical University came into existence in 1773, as the Imperial institution for Naval Engineering. Considered as one of the most prestigious institutions in Turkey, the university’s main campus is located in Istanbul, Turkey. In addition to the central campus in Maslak, other campuses of the university are spread across Istanbul- Tuzla, Taksim Square, Gumussuyu and Macka.
Enrolling more than 35,000 students every year, the university comprises 13 faculties including Mechanical Engineering, Astronautics and Aeronautics, Metallurgical Engineering and Chemical Engineering among others. Offering over 35 postgraduate and doctoral degree programs, the university operates a number of research centers such as Genetics and Biotechnology Research Center, Molecular Biology Center, Remote Sensing and Satellite Communications Research Center among 350 others.
Over 15 of the programmes specializing in engineering are credentialed by ABET Accreditation. Also, the university offers myriad opportunities for the enrolled students to study abroad. Exchange programs for international students provide students with the option of earning dual diplomas with over 900 partner universities.
ITU has always remained its focus on development and research areas. Seed Program led by the university promotes the entrepreneurial endeavors of the students making them fit to face the hypercompetitive marketplace.
Numerous firsts have been developed at the Istanbul Technical University like- 1st Communication Satellite of Turkey, 1st driverless car and 1st Hydrogen-power boat. Also, Turkey’s first television broadcast was made from the university. The prominent personalities associated with the university include Kerim Erim, Cahit Arf, Aykut Barka and Rudolf Belling among others.
The aim of the University is to expand the borders of research and knowledge and applications in technology, art and science in order to contribute to the sustainable community of Turkey.
