Member of the C9 League, one of the best higher education institutions in China and National Key University – pretty much sums up what Peking University means to China. Established in 1898 as ‘Imperial University of Peking’, PKU is considered as the first modern University in China.
The main campus of the university known as ‘Yan Yuan’ is located in the Haidian District in Beijing. Spread over more than 250 hectares of land, it is near to the Summer Palace and Yuanmingyuan. Comprising more than 25 colleges and around 10 departments, the university offers around 90 major areas of study for undergraduates, over 150 majors for Master’s and around 200 fields of study for doctoral programs. Some of the primary schools and departments include- Institute of Computer Science, Institute of Ocean Research, Department of History and School of Foreign Languages among others.
As of now, the university has more than 200 research centers including over 10 national laboratories, 80 national disciplines and two engineering research centers. It has also become a center for research and teaching comprising diverse branches ranging from Applied Sciences to humanities and management.
The teaching staff of over 4,000 faculty members includes more than 50 associates of Chinese Academy of Sciences and more than 10 members of Third World Academy (Sciences). Notable alumni of the university include a number of prominent thinkers of modern China such as Tu Youyou and Hao Ping among others.
Peking University in collaboration with Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology administers a program specializing in Biomedical Engineering. The university in order to add a range of new disciplines and medical courses merged with the Medical University of Beijing in 2000.
