Founded in the year 1873, and popularly known as Vandy, the University derived its name from a rail industrialist, Cornelius Vanderbilt. It was, in fact, the very same person who gave the university its first endowment, of $1million. He believed that this would help the university to do better work for the betterment of the society and the world, which during that time was ruined because of Civil War. This little move of his made the university what it is today, standing tall with some great names make it big in the world.
Today around 12000 students from different countries can be found enrolled in the university under various programs. Vanderbilt University has 4 Bachelors school and 6 schools that offer post-graduate and professional degrees. Spread in 330 acres of land, the university has every single thing to offer within the campus, except for satellite clinics and observatory. The best thing that lures many of the athletics students to this university is the football stadium that can accommodate around 40,000 people. Since it’s a private research-based university, it is organized and managed by Board of Trust, which includes 45 member committee. These members make sure everything in the university is up to the mark. For this very reason, the admission to undergraduate programs is considered a little difficult since the board is highly selective in the procedure.
When it comes to giving the student the freedom, more than 500 student organizations are established who work on different topics and issues. As much as they believe in imparting the best knowledge, extracurricular activities are given equal importance. As a matter of fact, Vanderbilt University has won 3 National Championships. Also, the university leaves no stone unturned in their training.
When it comes to naming notable alumni of the university the list seems never ending. From Noble laureates to Academy Award winners, all of them have found their alma mater in Vanderbilt University.
