Founded in 1209, and accredited Royal Charter status in 1231, University of Cambridge ranks fourth in oldest-surviving Universities. Situated in Cambridge, England, it is also considered as the second-oldest University. Comprising 31 constituent colleges and more than 105 academic departments spread over six different schools, the university came into existence from a variety of institutions.

The reputation of scientists coming from Cambridge University was established in the late 19th century by Darwin and Clerk Maxwell followed by J.J Thomson, Lord Rutherford and Lord Rayleigh among others. The university has seen an accelerated growth rate since then.

The university comprise over 105 libraries.

Over the period of its history, Cambridge University has pumped out a sizeable number of notable scientists and Nobel laureates. The University of Cambridge has 90 Nobel Prize Winners, more than 5 field medal champions and two Abel Prize Winners.
